The best part, you’re just minutes from the mountains no matter where you live in Colorado Springs. From stunning vistas to serene alpine meadows, there is no shortage of beauty to be found on these popular hikes. Whether you’re looking for a challenging trek or a leisurely stroll, here are some of the best hikes in Colorado Springs.
- Garden of the Gods: This iconic park is one of the most visited attractions in Colorado Springs, and for good reason. With towering sandstone formations, stunning views of Pikes Peak, and a variety of easy to moderate trails, it’s a great place for hikers of all levels. The Siamese Twins Trail and the Perkins Central Garden Trail are both popular routes, offering up-close views of the park’s famous rock formations. Although it tends to be one of the busier parks, it’s an absolute “must-do” at least once, whether you are a Colorado native or just visiting the Pikes Peak area.
- Pikes Peak: If you’re up for a challenge, hike to the summit of Pikes Peak and “bag a fourteener” as the locals say. A “fourteener” (mountain above 14,000 feet high at the summit) right in our own backyard, the Barr Trail is the most popular route, spanning 13 miles and gaining over 7,800 feet in elevation. The trail is steep and strenuous, but the views at the top are worth it. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction. The ever popular Manitou Incline connects to Barr Trail, but is a strenuous hike that you will want to do on a separate day.
- Seven Falls: This series of cascading waterfalls is a sight to behold, and the hike to get there is equally impressive. The trail is just over a mile long, but it’s steep and rocky in places. Once you reach the falls, you can climb a set of stairs to the top for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.
- Cheyenne Mountain State Park: With over 20 miles of trails, Cheyenne Mountain State Park offers hikers plenty of options. The Blackmer Loop Trail is a popular choice, offering sweeping views of Colorado Springs and the surrounding mountains. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and black bears.
- Red Rock Canyon Open Space: This park offers a variety of trails for hikers of all levels, from easy strolls to challenging treks. The Hogback Valley Trail is a favorite, offering stunning views of the park’s red rock formations and the surrounding foothills. The park is also popular with mountain bikers and rock climbers.
- Mount Cutler: This short but steep hike offers panoramic views of Colorado Springs and the surrounding mountains. The trail is just under two miles round trip, but it gains over 700 feet in elevation. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Colorado Springs and the nearby foothills. PRO TIP: Because of the easy access and no entry fee, parking is limited so plan to go on a weekday.
- Palmer Park: This park offers over 25 miles of trails, ranging from easy to challenging. The Templeton Trail is a favorite, offering stunning views of the park’s rock formations and the surrounding mountains. The park is also popular with mountain bikers and horseback riders.
- Pulpit Rock: Easy access to this park, located in the middle of Colorado Springs near UCCS! Just choose one of the multiple parking lots or side streets to access the dirt trails and natural landscape. The views at the top of Pulpit Rock are phenomenal for such a short hike, but access the rock from the east side (approach from behind). Take time to explore the trails and enjoy the sunny Colorado weather!
